Real and Imaginary Elements of Fermion Mass Matrices

چکیده
Prompted by the recent better determination of the angles of the unitarity triangle, we re-appraise the problem of finding simple fermion mass textures, possibly linked to some symmetry principle and compatible with grand unification. In particular, the indication that the angle α is close to rectangle turns out to be the crucial ingredient leading us to single out fermion mass textures whose elements are either real or purely imaginary. In terms of the five parameters ascribed to the quark sector, these textures reproduce the eight experimental data on quark mass ratios and mixings within 1σ. When embedded in an SU(5) framework, these textures suggest a common origin for quark and lepton CP violations, also linked to the spontaneous breaking of the gauge group. ”Perche’, secondo l’opinion mia, a chi vuole una cosa ritrovare, bisogna adoperar la fantasia, e giocar d’invenzione, e ’ndovinare.” (Galileo Galilei)

General Analysis of Phases in Quark Mass Matrices
We give a detailed discussion of our general determination of (i) the number of unremovable, physically meaningful phases in quark mass matrices and (ii) which elements of these matrices can be rendered real by rephasings of fermion fields. The results are applied to several currently viable models. New results are presented for an arbitrary number of fermion generations; these provide further ...

متن کاملQuasi-Quark Spectrum in the Chiral Symmetric Phase from the Schwinger-Dyson Equation
We non-perturbatively study the fermion spectrum in the chiral symmetric phase from the Schwinger-Dyson equation with the Feynman gauge, in which we perform an analytic continuation of the solution on the imaginary time axis to the real time axis with a method employing an integral equation. It is shown that the fermion spectrum has two peaks, which correspond to the normal quasi-fermion and th...
متن کاملFermion Mass Matrices versus Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa Matrix
A parameter free, model independent analysis of quark mass matrices is carried out. We find a representation in terms of a diagonal mass matrix for the down (up) quarks and a suitable matrix for the up (down) quarks, such that the mass parameters only depend on the u, c, t (d, s, b) quark masses and on the CabibboKobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements. The results found may also be applied to the Di...
